SSBKA ADVICE: TAKING UP BEEKEEPING IN 2020
Our candid advice is that without training and support, please do not attempt taking up beekeeping as a hobby this year. We would be unable to assist or support you at this time, and we have a very strict policy of not selling bees to anyone inexperienced or who has not undertaken some basic training.
Many beginners, even those with some training, lose their colonies in the first year or two, to disease, starvation and swarming. It can be very disheartening for a “newbee”, not to mention very expensive.
A useful reading list has been prepared by the Scottish Beekeepers Association.
Also, they have some videos and worksheets which can be accessed free of charge at

We might also suggest you join SSBKA – although activity is currently suspended, there are still benefits of membership and regular communications from the team. Instructions on how to join can be found at the Membership Section of this website
Sorry for the disappointing news, and hope we can help again in the future.
Stay safe!
